Do you know that these four things are also magnetic?

Published:2021/12/02

You may know that refrigerators and some metals will be attracted by magnets, but there are some amazing items that you may never think are magnetic. In this article, we will introduce some daily necessities that actually have magnetism.

1. Dollar bill

Believe it or not, dollar bills are weakly magnetic. You can test with one dollar and one of our powerful rare earth magnets. Just curl up one edge of the dollar and brush it gently with a magnet. It will have a small attraction, which may not be enough to make the dollar stick and be picked up, but it is enough to attract it, because the ink used in the dollar bill is magnetic.

2. Grain

In this case, technically, the grain is not as magnetic as the iron added to it. Some brands of cereals add a small amount of iron for nutritional value. People with low levels of iron in their blood may need to take iron supplements or adjust their diet to add more foods with high levels of iron. Testing the iron content of different brands of cereals can be an interesting school or family experiment. All you need is a powerful rare earth magnet, different types of grain, water and a resealable bag. 3. Sand

Not all sands are magnetic, but one kind of sand is black sand. Black sand looks as like as two peas. Its color is so dark because of the way it is formed and the substances it contains. Sand is formed by weathering, which decomposes some minerals and materials in the area. Speaking of black sand, a magnetic mineral called magnetite is the main component. Magnetite is a kind of natural oxide, which is black and contains a lot of iron, so it is magnetic. It usually forms around volcanoes and after eruptions.

4. Meteorite

Meteorites, or meteors falling from the sky, fall on the earth. It's usually magnetic. This is because they contain some minerals and elements we have on earth. In the case of meteorites, they contain extraterrestrial iron, which will be absorbed by magnets. In fact, magnets are often used as preliminary tests to check the authenticity of meteorites. If you want to see if other daily necessities are magnetic, please pick up a powerful magnet and test its magnetism around, track the items it picks up and try to find out why.
