What determines the strength of a magnet?

Published:2022/03/16

There are many different kinds of magnets. They have different sizes, shapes, materials and strengths. They all produce a force called magnetic force, which enables them to attract or stick to some metals. However, some magnets can't even fix a piece of paper on the refrigerator, while others can lift heavy objects. So what determines the strength of the magnet?

1Material type

Every substance is composed of tiny units called atoms. Each atom has electrons. Electrons move constantly. Their movement will produce an electric current, making each electron like a small magnet. Most substances have the same number of electrons rotating in the opposite direction, which offsets their magnetism. But some substances have strong magnetism, which means that most of their electrons rotate in the same direction. These substances have high permeability and are the strongest magnets. Iron, cobalt and nickel belong to these substances, and NdFeB is the most powerful magnet.

2External magnetic field

To turn a substance into a magnet, it must be exposed to the magnetic field of the existing magnet. The stronger the external magnetic field is applied, the stronger the magnet will be generated.

3Size specification

Does bigger mean stronger? When you magnetize a piece of iron, the north pole of the atom is aligned. The force produced by aligned atoms produces a magnetic field. A larger piece of iron will have more atoms to arrange, which may result in a stronger magnetic field than a small piece of the same material. However, for extremely long iron sheets, the risk of stray magnetic fields dislocating atoms and actually reducing the magnetic field strength of the magnet increases.

Choose the right magnet

Although not an important factor in determining the strength of magnets, size and shape are equally important depending on the application.

Our company can provide rare earth Qin magnets, black magnets, ferrite magnets, color cobalt magnets and radial multipole magnets of various sizes, shapes and strengths, and is happy to help you find suitable magnets for your project. Welcome to consult.
